What the outline heart is
♡ is officially named WHITE HEART SUIT (U+2661). In Unicode names, "white" means outlined and "black" means filled, so ♡ is the hollow partner of ♥︎ (BLACK HEART SUIT), the same way ☆ pairs with ★ and ♢ with ♦︎. Both hearts come from playing cards and have been in Unicode since version 1.1 in 1993.
Unlike ❤︎ and ♥︎, the outline heart has no emoji version. Phones never swap it for a colored picture, so ♡ always matches the color and weight of the text around it. That makes it a favorite for minimal bios, captions and display names.
Outline heart vs white heart emoji
The white heart emoji 🤍 looks similar but is a different character from 2019. It has a white fill and a gray edge, so it stands out on dark backgrounds and looks faint on white ones. ♡ is thinner, older and works on almost every device. The white heart symbol page covers 🤍 and what it means in messages.
How ♡ looks depends on the font: some draw a thin line, others a bold, rounded outline. If it looks too light, try a heavier font or pair it with a filled ♥︎ for contrast. For every other heart style, see the main heart symbol page.
How to type ♡
There is no single-number Alt code for ♡ on Windows. In Microsoft Word, type 2661 and press Alt + X. On a Mac, press Control + Command + Space, search for "heart suit" and double-click ♡. In LaTeX, \heartsuit prints the outline heart.
On phones, the quickest way is to copy ♡ from this page and save it as a text replacement. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement; on Gboard, use the personal dictionary. Then a shortcut such as "hrt" types ♡ for you.
