The 24 letters of the Greek alphabet

The Greek alphabet has 24 letters, running from alpha (Α α) to omega (Ω ω). Every letter has a capital and a small form, and sigma has two small forms: σ inside a word and ς at the end of one, as in κόσμος. The word "alphabet" itself comes from the first two letters, alpha and beta.

Watch out for capitals that look exactly like Latin letters: Α, Β, Ε, Ζ, Η, Ι, Κ, Μ, Ν, Ο, Ρ, Τ, Υ and Χ. They are separate characters with their own code points, so a Greek Ρ (rho) will not match a P in a search, a password or a spell checker. Η is eta and Ρ is rho, not H and P.

Some letters also have variant shapes that mathematicians treat as separate symbols: ϵ next to ε, ϕ next to φ, ϑ next to θ and ϖ next to π. Older letters such as digamma (Ϝ), koppa (Ϙ) and sampi (Ϡ) dropped out of the alphabet but survive as Greek numerals.

What Greek symbols mean in math and science

Greek letters are the standard shorthand of science. A few you will meet again and again: π for the circle constant 3.14159, Σ for a sum, Δ for "change in", λ for wavelength, μ for micro and for the mean, σ for standard deviation, θ for an angle and Ω for ohms. Physics names the three classic kinds of radiation α, β and γ.

Outside the lab, Greek letters name American college fraternities and sororities, honor societies such as Phi Beta Kappa (ΦΒΚ), the bright stars of each constellation (α Centauri) and software stages (alpha and beta releases). When you copy letters for a chapter name or a jersey, use the real Greek characters above rather than Latin look-alikes.

How to type Greek letters

On Windows, a handful of Greek letters have Alt codes from the old DOS character set: hold Alt and type 224 for α, 227 for π, 228 for Σ, 234 for Ω or 235 for δ on the number pad. Note that Alt + 225 gives the German ß, not β. In Word, type a letter's hex code (such as 03B2 for β) and press Alt + X.

On a Mac with the US layout, Option + P types π, Option + Z types Ω, Option + J types ∆ and Option + W types ∑. For everything else, add Greek as an input source in System Settings > Keyboard, or open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space.

On iPhone and Android, add Greek as a keyboard language and switch to it with the globe key. In LaTeX, use the letter name with a backslash: \alpha, \beta, \Delta, \Omega. Capitals that look Latin, such as Alpha and Beta, have no command; just type A or B. Need a single letter in detail? Start with the alpha symbol.

Usually, yes. Greek letters are standard Unicode text that displays on almost every device. A few games limit names to basic Latin letters, so test the name before you rely on it.

Which Greek letters are used most in math?

π (pi), Σ and σ (sigma), Δ and δ (delta), θ (theta), λ (lambda), μ (mu) and α (alpha) are among the most common, followed by ε, φ and ω.
