How to use text dividers

A text divider is a short line of symbols that splits a caption, bio or message into clear sections. Because it is made of ordinary characters, it works anywhere you can type: Instagram and TikTok captions, Discord server rules and channel topics, Notion pages, Carrd sites, email newsletters and even text messages.

Keep dividers fairly short, around 12 to 20 characters, so they fit on one line on a phone screen. A divider also keeps paragraphs visually apart in apps that squeeze blank lines together. Use the same style throughout a post or server so it looks planned rather than random.

Why dividers look different on other devices

Every phone and computer draws characters with its own fonts. Lines made of box-drawing characters like ━ and ┈ look very consistent, while dividers with emoji, Japanese kana or rare symbols such as ꒷꒦ may change shape or width from one device to another. Before posting, preview your caption on both iPhone and Android if you can.

If a symbol shows as an empty box, that device has no font for it, so swap it for a more common one like ✦, ♡ or ✿. Simple dividers are also kinder to screen readers, which read each symbol aloud.

Make your own divider

Most dividers follow one recipe: a line character on each side and a small centerpiece in the middle. Pick a line (─ ━ ┈ ═ ︵‿), a centerpiece (✦ ♡ ✿ ☾ ୨୧) and mirror it: ┈┈┈ ♡ ┈┈┈. Find more line characters on the horizontal line symbols page and centerpieces on the sparkle symbols and bow symbols pages.

Want a full frame instead of a single line? The border symbols page has matching top and bottom borders.
