Popular symbols without a named entity
These have no name in HTML, so use the numeric code.
How to use HTML symbol codes
Write the entity or numeric code straight into your HTML, for example <p>I ♥ Unicode</p>. Named entities are easier to read; numeric codes such as ♥ work for every character, including the ones on our symbol keyboard .
If your page is saved as UTF-8 (the default for modern sites), you can also paste the symbol itself. Codes are still handy in email templates, CMS fields that strip special characters, and when you want the source to stay plain ASCII. To find the code of any character, use the Unicode lookup .
Frequently asked questions
What is an HTML entity?
A short code that starts with & and ends with ;, such as ♥ for ♥ or © for ©. Browsers show the symbol instead of the code.
Should I use named or numeric codes?
Both work in every modern browser. Numeric codes like ♥ exist for every Unicode character, while names exist only for some. In UTF-8 pages you can also paste the symbol itself.
How do I add a symbol with CSS?
Use the CSS code in the content property of a pseudo-element, for example content: "\2665"; for a heart.
