How text loading bars work
A text loading bar is a row of "filled" characters followed by "empty" ones. With ten characters, each one counts as 10%, so ▰▰▰▱▱▱▱▱▱▱ reads as 30%. The most popular pair is ▰ and ▱, officially the black parallelogram and white parallelogram, which give a slanted, modern look.
Other good pairs are █ and ░ (full block and light shade), ■ and □, ▮ and ▯, ● and ○, or emoji squares like 🟩 and ⬜︎. Always take both halves from the same family: they are designed to be the same width, so the bar stays the same length at every percentage.
Tips for clean bars
Most apps use proportional fonts, where some characters are wider than others. If your bar looks uneven, try a different pair or wrap it in a code block on Discord (between backticks), which switches to a monospace font. Emoji bars like 🟩🟩⬜︎⬜︎ look the same width almost everywhere, but they take up more space and look different on each platform.
For finer steps than 10%, the eighth blocks ▏ ▎ ▍ ▌ ▋ ▊ ▉ █ let you end a bar with a partial block. Bars are great for year progress posts, reading goals, fundraising updates, game health bars and "mood: ▰▰▰▱▱" bios. Add the label and percentage after the bar so it is readable at a glance.
More symbols for status updates
For a spinner or "please wait" icon instead of a percentage, see the loading symbol page with ↻, ⏳︎ and braille spinner frames. To separate a progress bar from the rest of your bio, add a line from the divider symbols page, and for more filled and empty shapes, browse the square symbols.
