Ways to use the down arrow
The down arrow ↓ (officially downwards arrow, U+2193) is the go-to pointer for anything below: "link in bio ↓", "details ↓" or a numbered list that follows. It also means "decrease" (price ↓ 5%), "downvote" and "download". Drop-down menus and sort buttons tend to use the small triangle ▼ or ▾ instead of an arrow.
In chemistry, ↓ written after a product means it forms a precipitate, just as ↑ marks a gas. The zigzag ↯ is a down arrow with a lightning-style bend, and curved arrows like ⤵︎ and ↴ suggest "continue below" or "next line".
Text arrows vs emoji arrows
Thin arrows like ↓ ⇩ ⇣ look like regular text and keep the same color as your words, which suits clean, minimal bios. The heavier ⬇︎ and the triangle 🔽 can show as colorful emoji tiles on phones, so they stand out more but also look different on every platform.
If you want three arrows pointing at your link, mix and match: ↓ ↓ ↓ looks subtle, ⬇︎⬇︎⬇︎ looks bold, and 👇 adds a hand. Short, spaced arrows are easier to read than a long run. For pointing fingers in every direction, see the hand symbols page.
How to type a down arrow
On Windows, hold Alt and type 25 on the number pad to get ↓, or Alt + 31 for ▼. On a Mac, open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search "down arrow". On iPhone and Android, search "down" in the emoji keyboard for ⬇️ and 🔽.
In Microsoft Word, type 2193 and press Alt + X. In HTML, use ↓ for ↓ or ⇓ for ⇓, and in LaTeX use \downarrow or \Downarrow. Need the opposite? Copy the up arrow symbol, or browse every direction on the arrow symbols page.
