Which symbol means non-binary?
There is no single official non-binary symbol, and usage varies from person to person. The two most common text symbols are the neuter sign ⚲, a circle with a short line below it, and the Mercury sign ☿, which looks like the female sign ♀︎ with two small horns on top. People choose them because they are neither the male sign ♂︎ nor the female sign ♀︎.
Some non-binary people use the transgender symbol ⚧︎, since many see themselves as part of the wider trans community, and others use ⚥, which joins the male and female signs. Some simply use a plain circle ⚪︎. Several hand-drawn enby designs you see on stickers and pins are not part of Unicode, so they cannot be copied as text. If you are making something for another person, use the symbol they use.
The non-binary flag and its colors
The non-binary pride flag, introduced in 2014, has four horizontal stripes: yellow, white, purple and black. The colors are usually explained like this: yellow for people whose gender is outside the binary, white for people with many or all genders, purple for a mix of male and female, and black for people without a gender.
There is no standard non-binary flag emoji, so people rebuild it with colored hearts 💛🤍💜🖤 or squares 🟨⬜︎🟪⬛︎. The transgender flag 🏳️⚧️ and the rainbow flag 🏳️🌈 are real emoji and work on every modern phone.
How to add non-binary symbols to your bio
Click any symbol above to copy it, then paste it into Instagram, TikTok, Discord or X next to your pronouns, for example ⚲ they/them. The flag hearts work anywhere emoji do.
Text symbols like ⚲ and ☿ come from the Miscellaneous Symbols block of Unicode, so nearly every phone and computer can show them, though the look depends on the font. To type them yourself in Microsoft Word, enter 26B2 (for ⚲) or 263F (for ☿) and press Alt + X. On a Mac, press Control + Command + Space and search "neuter" or "mercury". For the planet meaning of ☿, see the Mercury symbol page, and for every other sign, the gender symbols list.
