The text crowns are chess pieces
The text crowns most people use are actually chess pieces. โ WHITE CHESS QUEEN and โ BLACK CHESS QUEEN show a pointed crown, which is why they stand for "queen". โ WHITE CHESS KING and โ BLACK CHESS KING are usually topped with a small cross and stand for "king". As with other symbols, "white" means outline and "black" means filled.
All four have been in Unicode since 1993, so they show up on almost every device and keep the color of your text. โ is a popular choice in bios and gaming names, often framed like โ Name โ.
Crown emoji and royal symbols
๐ CROWN (Unicode 6.0, 2010) is a gold crown with jewels. It means royalty, winning, being the best at something, or calling someone a king or queen. ๐ซ PERSON WITH CROWN (2021) is a gender-neutral royal, alongside ๐ธ princess and ๐คด prince.
โ๏ธ is the fleur-de-lis, a stylized lily tied to French royalty and heraldry. ๐ gems and ๐ฐ castles round out a royal theme, and the diamond symbol page has more jewels. For crowns in gamer tags, see cool symbols.
How to type a crown
On Windows, press Win + . (period) and search "crown" for ๐, or in Microsoft Word type 2655 and press Alt + X for โ (265B gives โ). On a Mac, press Control + Command + Space and search for "chess queen" or "crown". On phones, search "crown" in the emoji keyboard.
If an app blocks emoji in names, the chess crowns โ โ โ โ often still work because they are plain text. The rest of the set is on the chess symbols page.
