Sparkle symbols and their real names
Most text sparkles were borrowed from math, typography and Japanese. ✧ and ✦ are WHITE and BLACK FOUR POINTED STAR, ⋆ is the math STAR OPERATOR, ⊹ is HERMITIAN CONJUGATE MATRIX, ˚ is the RING ABOVE accent, and ・ ゚ 。 are halfwidth Japanese marks. The character actually named SPARKLE is ❇︎ (U+2747), and the emoji ✨︎ is SPARKLES (U+2728).
Because they are tiny and light, these characters read as glitter rather than as stars. Mix two or three of them, like ⁺‧₊˚ or ✧˖°, for a soft twinkle, and use heavier shapes such as ✶ ✸ or ❈ for a bolder flash.
How to use sparkles in bios and captions
Put sparkles on both sides of a word to frame it, like ✧ name ✧, or wrap a phrase in ✨︎ emoji for emphasis. Online, ✨︎this✨︎ can mean real excitement or playful sarcasm, so read the room.
Do not overload a line. Screen readers read each symbol aloud by name, so ten sparkles can sound like a long list of math terms. For more soft decorations, see aesthetic symbols and star symbols; for full-width borders, see divider symbols.
How to type sparkles
On iPhone and Android, search the emoji keyboard for "sparkles" to get ✨︎. On Windows, press Win + . (period); on a Mac, press Control + Command + Space and search for "four pointed star" to find ✦ and ✧. In Microsoft Word, type 2727 and press Alt + X for ✧.
On a Mac, Option + K types the ring above ˚, one of the most common sparkle pieces, so you can build combos like ˚✧ without leaving the keyboard.
