What the Scorpio symbol ♏︎ shows
The Scorpio glyph ♏︎ is an m with a tail that ends in an arrowhead. The humps are the scorpion's body and legs, and the arrow is its raised sting. In Unicode the character is officially named SCORPIUS, after the Latin name of the constellation, though almost everyone calls the sign Scorpio.
Scorpius is one of the few constellations that really looks like its animal, with a long curved tail of stars. Its brightest star, the red supergiant Antares, marks the heart. In Greek myth the scorpion killed the hunter Orion, and the two were placed on opposite sides of the sky so they never meet.
Scorpio dates, element and rulers
Scorpio covers roughly October 23 to November 21 in the tropical zodiac, and the boundaries can move by a day from year to year. It is a water sign, with ♋︎ Cancer and ♓︎ Pisces, and a fixed sign in the middle of the Northern Hemisphere autumn.
Traditional astrology gives Scorpio to Mars ♂︎, the same glyph as the male symbol. Modern astrology adds Pluto, written either ♇, a P and L joined for Pluto and Percival Lowell, or ⯓, a circle above a crescent and a cross, the form many astrologers prefer.
Scorpio ♏︎ vs Virgo ♍︎
The two signs share the same m-shaped start, so they are easy to mix up. Look at the tail: Scorpio's ends in a straight arrow pointing outward, Virgo's curls back into a closed loop. If you are unsure, open the ⋯ menu on the symbol to check its name, or compare it with the Virgo symbol.
Phones also turn ♏︎ into a purple emoji. Keep Symbol style on Text and the copy carries an invisible U+FE0E, so the sign stays a flat glyph; choose Emoji if you want the square icon.
