What the Sagittarius symbol ♐︎ shows
The Sagittarius glyph ♐︎ is an arrow pointing up and to the right, with a short bar across the shaft. It is the arrow of the archer: Sagittarius is Latin for "archer", and the constellation is usually drawn as a centaur, half human and half horse, aiming a bow.
Look toward Sagittarius on a dark summer night in the Northern Hemisphere and you are looking at the center of our galaxy, where the Milky Way is thickest and the black hole Sagittarius A* sits. Stargazers know the brightest stars of the constellation as the Teapot.
Sagittarius dates, element and Jupiter
In the tropical zodiac, Sagittarius covers about November 22 to December 21. It ends at the December solstice, so the handover to ♑︎ Capricorn moves between December 21 and 22. It is a fire sign, with ♈︎ Aries and ♌︎ Leo, and a mutable sign that closes autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.
Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and in traditional astrology it rules ♓︎ Pisces too. Its glyph ♃ looks like a 4 with a curved arm; do not confuse it with the digit 4 or with ♄, the h-shaped glyph of Saturn.
♐︎ versus ordinary arrows
The sign is easy to replace with an arrow by accident. ↗︎ and ➚ are plain direction arrows with no crossbar, ➶ is a feathered arrow, and 🏹 is the bow and arrow emoji. Use ♐︎ for the zodiac sign and keep the others as decoration; the arrow symbol page has many more.
Like every zodiac sign, ♐︎ can turn into a purple emoji on phones. With Symbol style set to Text, the sign is copied with an invisible U+FE0E, so it keeps its plain arrow shape; switch to Emoji for the purple square.
