What the Pisces symbol ♓︎ shows
The Pisces glyph ♓︎ is two arcs turned away from each other and joined by a straight line. The arcs are two fish swimming in opposite directions, and the line is the cord that ties their tails together. Pisces is Latin for "fishes".
In one Greek and Roman story, Aphrodite (Venus) and her son Eros (Cupid) turned into fish to escape the monster Typhon and tied themselves together so they would not lose each other in the water.
Pisces dates, element and rulers
Pisces covers roughly February 19 to March 20 in the tropical zodiac. It ends at the March equinox, where the cycle starts over with ♈︎ Aries, so the last day can shift by one depending on the year.
Pisces is a water sign, with ♋︎ Cancer and ♏︎ Scorpio, and a mutable sign. Its traditional ruler is Jupiter ♃; modern astrology gives it Neptune, discovered in 1846, whose glyph ♆ is the sea god's trident. For more three-pronged shapes, see the trident symbol page.
Pisces and the March equinox
Earth's axis wobbles very slowly, so the spot in the sky where the Sun sits at the March equinox drifts backward through the constellations, roughly one constellation every two thousand years. Today that spot lies in the constellation Pisces, even though the tropical zodiac still calls it the start of Aries. The popular "Age of Aquarius" refers to the time when it moves on into Aquarius.
Phones turn ♓︎ into a purple emoji as well. Keep Symbol style on Text to copy it with an invisible U+FE0E so it stays flat, or choose Emoji for the purple square.
