What the Leo symbol ♌︎ shows
The Leo glyph ♌︎ is a small loop with a long curling tail. The loop is the lion's head and mane, and the sweep to the right is its tail. It stands for the constellation Leo, the Lion, which Greek myth links to the Nemean lion defeated by Heracles.
The constellation is one of the easier ones to spot. Its brightest star, Regulus, sits at the lion's heart, and a backward question mark of stars known as the Sickle outlines the head and mane.
Leo dates, element and the Sun
Leo covers roughly July 23 to August 22 in the tropical zodiac; in some years it starts on July 22 or ends on August 23. It is a fire sign, like ♈︎ Aries and ♐︎ Sagittarius, and a fixed sign in the middle of the Northern Hemisphere summer.
Leo is the only sign ruled by the Sun. Astrologers write the Sun as ☉, a circle with a dot in the middle. Do not mix it up with ⊙ (a math operator) or ʘ (a click sound in phonetics), which look similar. More sun glyphs are on the sun symbol page.
Why your Leo sign turns purple
The Leo sign has two forms: a flat text glyph and a colorful emoji. iPhones and many Android phones choose the emoji, a white ♌︎ on a purple background, whenever the app allows it. That is why a copied Leo symbol so often looks different from what you expected.
The fix is an invisible character, variation selector 15 (U+FE0E), right after the sign. With Symbol style set to Text, the default here, every ♌︎ you copy already includes it, so it stays flat in most apps. Set it to Emoji to copy the purple version (with U+FE0F) instead. A few apps ignore the selector and always show the emoji.
Leo bio ideas and typing
Leo combos usually lean on royalty and sunshine: 🦁 ♌︎ 👑, ☀︎ ♌︎ ☀︎, ♌︎ ☉ 🔥, or ♌︎ 08.08 with your birthday. Try your name in bold text next to the sign for a striking profile line.
To type it without copying, search "Leo" in the emoji panel (Windows key + . on Windows or Control + Command + Space on a Mac). In Word, type 264C and press Alt + X. See all signs and dates on the zodiac sign symbols page.
