What the Aries symbol ♈︎ shows
The Aries glyph ♈︎ is a ram's head reduced to its horns: two strokes that rise from a single point and curl outward at the top. It stands for the constellation Aries, the Ram, which Greek myth links to the ram with the golden fleece that Jason and the Argonauts set out to find.
Aries is the first sign because the tropical zodiac starts at the March equinox. Astronomers still call that point in the sky the First Point of Aries, even though the slow wobble of Earth's axis has since moved it into the constellation Pisces.
Aries dates, element and ruling planet
In the tropical zodiac used by most horoscopes, Aries covers roughly March 21 to April 19. The start moves with the equinox, so in some years Aries begins on March 20, and the switch to Taurus can shift by a day as well.
Aries is a fire sign, together with ♌︎ Leo and ♐︎ Sagittarius, and a cardinal sign, meaning it opens a season. Its ruling planet is Mars ♂︎, the same circle-and-arrow glyph that serves as the male symbol.
Flat sign or purple emoji
Like every zodiac sign, ♈︎ also exists as an emoji, so phones often show it as a white ram glyph on a purple square.
