Where fancy letters come from

Fancy letters are not fonts but separate Unicode characters, borrowed from blocks made for other purposes. Gothic 𝕬, double-struck 𝔸 and script letters come from Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols, where mathematicians use them as variables. Circled letters Ⓐ ⓐ come from Enclosed Alphanumerics, and the black circled 🅐 and squared 🅰︎ from its supplement.

Small caps like ᴀ ʙ ᴄ and turned letters like ɐ ɥ ʎ come from phonetic alphabets used by linguists, and fullwidth letters Ａ ｂ come from East Asian typesetting, where every character takes the same square space. Double-struck capitals have a math job too: ℝ, ℕ, ℤ, ℚ and ℂ name the real, natural, integer, rational and complex numbers, as explained on the real numbers symbol page.

Choosing an alphabet

Gothic fraktur 𝕬𝖇𝖈 gives a medieval, metal or tattoo look (try the Old English text generator). Circled letters ⓐⓑⓒ feel playful and bubbly, like the bubble text generator. Small caps ᴀʙᴄ look clean and minimal in bios, and the small text generator converts whole lines at once. Fullwidth ａｅｓｔｈｅｔｉｃ is the classic vaporwave style.

Upside-down letters are for jokes and puzzles, and the upside down text generator also reverses the order so the text reads correctly when flipped. Unicode has no small capital X, so small caps text uses a normal x, and the small capital Q ꞯ is new enough that some fonts lack it.

Things to know before you use them

Screen readers may read fancy letters by their math names or skip them, and search features usually do not match them with normal words, so keep key details in plain letters. Some games and websites do not allow them in usernames. The squared letters 🅰︎ 🅱︎ 🅾︎ 🅿︎ are also emoji, so they can appear as colored tiles on phones.
