Every wing pair and where it comes from
Text wings are borrowed letters and marks that happen to curve outward. ʚ and ɞ are Latin phonetic letters (ɞ is the IPA sign for an open-mid central rounded vowel). 𓆩 and 𓆪 are Egyptian hieroglyphs, ꧁ and ꧂ are Javanese ornaments, ༺ and ༻ are Tibetan marks, Ƹ and Ʒ are the Latin letter ezh and its reverse, and ε з pair a Greek epsilon with a Cyrillic ze.
Always pair a left wing with its right partner and put your symbol or name in the middle. Leave spaces for a wide frame (ʚ ♡ ɞ) or none for a tight one (ʚ♡ɞ).
Which wings to choose
Small and cute: ʚ ɞ, which also make the butterfly ʚїɞ. Soft and angelic: 𓆩 𓆪, explained on the angel wings symbol page. Big and dramatic, the gaming favorite: ꧁ ꧂ and ༺ ༻, often stacked as ꧁༺ Name ༻꧂.
Emoji wings are separate pictures. 🪽 WING arrived in Emoji 15.0 in 2022; before that, people used 🦋 butterfly, 🕊︎ dove, 🪶 feather and 🦅 eagle, or 🦇 bat and 🐉 dragon for darker, Halloween-style wings. Add 👼 or 😇 from the angel symbols page for a halo.
Wing symbols that show as boxes
ʚ ɞ ε з Ƹ Ʒ are in almost every font, so they are the safest choice. The hieroglyph, Javanese and Tibetan wings need fonts for those scripts, which most current phones and computers have but older devices may lack.
If a pair shows up as boxes on a friend's phone, swap it for ʚ ɞ. Remember that what you see on your own screen is not always what other people see.
