What the Capricorn symbol ♑︎ shows
Capricorn is a sea-goat: the front half of a goat with the tail of a fish. The glyph ♑︎ follows that shape, with the goat's horns on the left and the fish tail curling into a loop on the right. The goat-fish is very old and goes back to Babylonian astronomy, long before the Greeks.
Capricorn is also the sign that changes most between fonts. Some draw it as a V joined to a looped tail, others as a smooth n with a curl at the end. It is the same character, U+2651, in every case, so it still means Capricorn on any device.
Capricorn dates, element and Saturn
Capricorn covers roughly December 22 to January 19 in the tropical zodiac. It starts at the December solstice, so the first day can be December 21. The Tropic of Capricorn is named after it: about two thousand years ago, the Sun stood in front of the Capricornus constellation on that solstice.
Capricorn is an earth sign, with ♉︎ Taurus and ♍︎ Virgo, and a cardinal sign that opens winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Saturn ♄, the glyph that looks like a small h with a cross, rules it; traditional astrology gives Saturn ♒︎ Aquarius as well.
Getting a flat ♑︎ instead of the emoji
Because ♑︎ is also an emoji, phones often replace the font's shape with a white sea-goat glyph on a purple square. Keep Symbol style on Text and the copied sign includes an invisible U+FE0E, so most apps draw it with the regular font. Pick Emoji when you want the purple icon.
There is no sea-goat emoji, so people combine 🐐 (goat) with 🐟 (fish). Saturn has no emoji either; 🪐 (ringed planet) is the usual stand-in.
