All eight moon phase symbols
The Moon goes through eight named phases in about 29.5 days, and each one has its own emoji: ๐ new moon, ๐ waxing crescent, ๐ first quarter, ๐ waxing gibbous, ๐ full moon, ๐ waning gibbous, ๐ last quarter and ๐ waning crescent. Waxing means the lit part is growing; waning means it is shrinking.
A "quarter" moon looks half lit because the Moon is a quarter or three quarters of the way through its cycle. The emoji show the Moon as it looks from the Northern Hemisphere. From Australia or South America the lit side is flipped, so a waxing crescent there looks like ๐.
Text moons and emoji moons
โพ and โฝ are plain text characters from Unicode 1.1, so they take the color and size of your font. Unicode calls โฝ "first quarter moon" and โพ "last quarter moon", although both look like crescents. The crescent moon symbol page explains which way each one faces.
The emoji moons are always in color. ๐ is a simple crescent, ๐ and ๐ are crescents with faces, and ๐ and ๐ are the full and new moon with faces, popular as cheeky reactions. โช๏ธ is the star and crescent, and โพ is the sleep symbol from power buttons. For the dark new moon and Black Moon Lilith โธ, see the black moon symbol page.
How to type a moon symbol
In Microsoft Word, type 263E and press Alt + X for โพ, or 263D for โฝ. On Windows, press Windows + . and search for "moon" to see every moon emoji. On a Mac, press Control + Command + Space. On iPhone and Android, search the emoji keyboard for "moon".
In bios, a moon reads best with a few small stars around it, like โพโ๏ฝก๐ฆน ยฐโฉ above. Pair it with a sun symbol for a day-and-night theme, or with clouds for a sleepy one.
