What ๊•€ really is

The wave everyone copies, ๊•€, is not an ocean symbol in Unicode. It is U+A540, the Vai syllable "ji", a letter of the Vai script used to write the Vai language of Liberia in West Africa. Its curly shape just happens to look like a little breaking wave, so it spread through bios as ๐ŸŒŠ ๊•€ ๊•€.

Because ๊•€ is a letter, it takes your text color and size and never turns into an emoji. Most modern phones and computers include a font for it, but an older device may show an empty box.

Other wave symbols

๐ŸŒŠ (water wave) is the emoji, added in Unicode 6.0, and always shows in color. The rest are text: โ‰‹ (triple tilde) and โ‰ˆ come from math, where โ‰ˆ means "almost equal" (see the approximately symbol); โˆฟ is the sine wave; ใ€ฐ๏ธŽ is a Japanese wavy dash; and ใ€œ is the Japanese wave dash, used for ranges like 10ใ€œ12.

The Aquarius sign โ™’๏ธŽ is drawn as two wavy lines because Aquarius is the water bearer, even though astrology counts it as an air sign. For drops and rain, see the water drop symbol page.

Ocean combos for bios

For a beach or surf bio, mix one emoji with text waves: ๐ŸŒŠ ๊•€ ๊•€, or โš“๏ธŽ ๊•€ ๊•€ ๊•€. Sea creatures like ๐Ÿš ๐Ÿฌ ๐Ÿข add a cute touch, and the beach symbols page has palms, umbrellas and sunsets to finish the look.

To type ๊•€ in Microsoft Word, enter A540 and press Alt + X. For ๐ŸŒŠ, search the emoji keyboard for "wave", but pick the water wave, not the waving hand ๐Ÿ‘‹.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ๊•€ symbol?

๊•€ is the Vai syllable "ji" (U+A540), a letter from the Vai script of Liberia. People use it as a text wave because of its curly shape.

How do I type a wave symbol?

Copy ๊•€ or โ‰‹ from this page, or search the emoji keyboard for "water wave" to get ๐ŸŒŠ. In Word, type A540 and press Alt + X for ๊•€.

Why does ๊•€ show as a box?

Your device has no font with Vai letters. Update the system, or use a wave that almost every font has, such as โ‰ˆ or ~.
